Brakemen were railroad employees whose job it was to assist the conductor and control the train's brakes. By the 1860's, brakes were still controlled by hand by turning a wheel. As more and more cars were added and the weight of the cars went up, the need for a better way arose. Various powered brakes were introduced and the government stepped in with the Safety Appliance Act of 1893, requiring power braking systems that could control the speed of the train without a brakeman!
Our Brakemen Dress will quickly stop all in their tracks! Made of the softest tan flannel, it features full sleeves, gentle shaping, a sweet low ruffled collar and silver colored front buttons. Belt not included.
